    Title:Automatic detection of face mask wearing based on polarization imaging

    Abstract:Amidst the global health crisis sparked by the coronavirus pandemic, the proliferation of respiratory illnesses has captured worldwide attention. An increasing number of individuals wear masks to mitigate the risk of viral transmission. This trend has posed a critical challenge for the development of automatic face mask wearing detection systems. In response, this paper proposed what we believe is a novel face mask wearing detection framework DOLP-YOLOv5, which innovatively employs polarization imaging to enhance the detection of face mask by leveraging the unique characteristics of mask surfaces. For extracting essential semantic details of masks and diminish the impact of background noise, the lightweight shuffle attention (SA) mechanism is integrated in the backbone. Further, a Content-Aware Bidirectional Feature Pyramid Network (CA-BiFPN) is applied for feature fusion, sufficiently integrating the information at each stage and improving the ability of the feature presentation. Moreover, Focal-EIoU loss is utilized for the bounding box regression to improve the accuracy and efficiency of detection. Benchmark evaluation is performed on the self-constructed polarization face mask (PFM) dataset compared with five other mainstream algorithms. The mAP50-95 of DOLP-YOLOv5 reached 63.5%, with 3.08% and 4.44% improvements over the YOLOv8s and YOLOv9s, and achieved a response speed of 384.6f/s. This research not only demonstrates the superiority of DOLP-YOLOv5 in face mask wearing detection, but also has certain reference significance for other detection of polarization imaging.

    Title:Optical design of a 5x zoom afocal telescope with deformable mirrors

    Abstract:All-reflective zoom afocal telescopes can be integrated with existing imaging systems as foreoptics, enabling flexible imaging with adjustable resolution. This paper proposes an approach to designing a 5x x zoom afocal telescope using deformable mirrors. Based on matrix optics, the first-order parameters for a coaxial reflective 5x x zoom afocal telescope with a fixed primary mirror and three deformable mirrors are determined. To prevent obscuration, the mirrors are tilted at their vertices, which introduces asymmetric aberrations. To correct these aberrations, XY polynomial surfaces are employed on the primary mirror and an additional flat fold mirror. The final design and image simulations indicate that the system achieves good image quality across all zoom positions, enabling 5x zoom imaging with a maximum root mean square wavefront error of less than 0.125 lambda (lambda = 632.8 nm), thereby validating the efficacy of the proposed design methodology.

    Abstract:A finite element model is proposed to investigate the impact of image charge technology on the imaging performance of capacitive division image readout (C-DIR) devices. Through detailed simulation analysis, we explore the charge density of the induction layer and each electrode layer in the multilayer capacitive anode. The position nonlinearity is calculated for various resistances per square of the induction layer and substrate thicknesses. The simulation results indicate a strong linear correlation between the position nonlinearity and substrate thickness, and an exponential decay relationship with the logarithmic resistance per square of the induction layer. The C-DIR detector is experimentally tested for imaging nonlinearity and counting rate, with the resistance per square of the induction layer ranging from 0.005 to 1000 M Omega, and the substrate thickness ranging from 1 to 5 mm. The experimental results validate the simulation conclusions and reveal the impact of the charge accumulation effect and shielding effect on the imaging performance of the detector, as well as the imaging compression phenomenon. Optimized image charge readout technology enables the C-DIR detector to achieve an imaging nonlinearity of 1.53% in the experiment.

    Title:Optical fibre based artificial compound eyes for direct static imaging and ultrafast motion detection

    Abstract:Natural selection has driven arthropods to evolve fantastic natural compound eyes (NCEs) with a unique anatomical structure, providing a promising blueprint for artificial compound eyes (ACEs) to achieve static and dynamic perceptions in complex environments. Specifically, each NCE utilises an array of ommatidia, the imaging units, distributed on a curved surface to enable abundant merits. This has inspired the development of many ACEs using various microlens arrays, but the reported ACEs have limited performances in static imaging and motion detection. Particularly, it is challenging to mimic the apposition modality to effectively transmit light rays collected by many microlenses on a curved surface to a flat imaging sensor chip while preserving their spatial relationships without interference. In this study, we integrate 271 lensed polymer optical fibres into a dome-like structure to faithfully mimic the structure of NCE. Our ACE has several parameters comparable to the NCEs: 271 ommatidia versus 272 for bark beetles, and 180 degrees field of view (FOV) versus 150-180 degrees FOV for most arthropods. In addition, our ACE outperforms the typical NCEs by similar to 100 times in dynamic response: 31.3 kHz versus 205 Hz for Glossina morsitans. Compared with other reported ACEs, our ACE enables real-time, 180 degrees panoramic direct imaging and depth estimation within its nearly infinite depth of field. Moreover, our ACE can respond to an angular motion up to 5.6x10(6) deg/s with the ability to identify translation and rotation, making it suitable for applications to capture high-speed objects, such as surveillance, unmanned aerial/ground vehicles, and virtual reality.

    Abstract:For the complex dual-attribute qualitative assessment problem of spacecraft ground equivalence tests, the paper proposes a comprehensive assessment method that integrates interval-type evaluation with prospect theory and the two-dimensional cloud model. Firstly, to reduce the difficulty of determining indicator weights, the paper adopts interval-type evaluation and obtains reasonable interval weights of each indicator under dual attributes by interval analytic hierarchy process (IAHP). Secondly, to reduce the uncertainty of assessment and achieve the transformation of interval weights to value weights, the paper combines the prospect theory to obtain the value weight of each indicator that can maximize the personality preference satisfaction of the decision-maker by maximizing the integrated prospect value. During this period, to avoid the construction of a complex score function, the theoretical gain and loss values of indicator evaluation were obtained directly from the theoretical calculation based on the location of interval evaluation results in relation to interval psychological reference points. Again, to judge the validity of the interval evaluation of indicators, the paper theoretically derives an inverse cloud generator for interval-type samples and then realizes the validity analysis of the interval evaluation of indicators based on the 3-sigma principle of clouds. Then, to solve the problem of dual-attribute assessment of equivalence tests, the paper achieves the effective assessment of spacecraft ground equivalence tests through inter-cloud aggregation and similarity calculation of two-dimensional cloud models. Finally, the application of the method in a specific assessment case verifies the feasibility, validity, and practicality of the method in this paper.

    Abstract:Frost formation is a normal phase transition phenomenon in cold climates, while it usually brings certain troubles to human lives and production. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop frost resistant materials and key technologies. Here, a salt-philic and superhydrophobic surface is designed on a PDMS substrate by femtosecond laser direct writing technology in combination with salt-ethanol-water mixtures droplet treatment. The laser-treated PDMS embedded salt (LTP-S) surface exhibits superhydrophobicity, which alone is a property that can resist the formation of frost and enables a self-cleaning effect. Meanwhile, the salt coating further enhances the frost resistance of the surface by reducing the freezing point temperature. The LTP-S surface is revealed to perform well in frosting-defrosting cycles, washing resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, heating resistance, and long-term air exposure tests as a highly efficient and stable anti-frosting surface. This work demonstrates a facile strategy to fabricate a salt-philic and superhydrophobic surface for efficient anti-frosting.

    Abstract:A polarimeter, fundamental for characterizing the polarization state of light, is critical for advancing optical measurement techniques by delivering precise polarization information. A compact and portable polarimeter holds particular importance in applications like remote sensing and medical diagnosis. However, existing methods for developing a compact polarimeter are difficult to achieve full Stokes vector detection for broadband operation, and the noise immunity is also very weak. These defects significantly constrain the versatility of polarimeters across diverse application scenarios. Herein, a metadevice with dual-layer subwavelength grating structure for full Stokes vector detection has been proposed, capable of simultaneously achieving broadband detection and noise suppression. The intensity of the four elliptical polarization states of the incident light can be captured by four regions on this metadevice, enabling the computation of the full polarization state information via Mueller matrix inversion. Additionally, a set of optimized retardance at 0.73 pi and orientation angles at 43 degrees, 80 degrees, 111 degrees, and 146 degrees is provided to effectively suppress the noise. The results indicate that the recovery error remains below 5% across the 450-650 nm spectral range, showcasing a 1.5-fold enhancement in noise suppression capability compared to conventional structures.

    Abstract:Remote detection of trace explosives and hazardous chemicals has been an ongoing challenge and a critical issue in defense science, public safety, and counterterrorism. Raman spectroscopy, a form of inelastic scattering, acts as a fingerprint analysis method for substance identification with high confidence in the detection of chemicals based on their vibrational modes. Here, we present a portable stand-off time-gated Raman spectroscopy, which consists of a passive Q-switched pulsed laser, a designed gated ICMOS, a spectrometer, and a telescope, with an overall size of 476.5 x 321.5 x 219.3 mm and a weight of 23.2 kg, which is much more compact and portable than reported previously. To confirm the effectiveness of the designed portable time-gated Raman spectroscopy, detections at different working distances and various amounts of substances are carried out. High levels of Raman identification are acquired even for 0.1 mg at a 10-m distance. Furthermore, we simulate realistic encounters in a possible war-zone scenario by testing the system's ability to recognize urea samples on different substrates such as an aluminum plate, woodblock, cardboard, black cloth, and leaf; good characteristic recognition is shown.

    Abstract:Single-photon LIDAR faces challenges in high-quality 3D reconstruction due to high noise levels, low accuracy, and long inference times. Traditional methods, which rely on statistical data to obtain parameter information, are inefficient in high-noise environments. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-based deep learning methods can improve 3D reconstruction quality compared to traditional methods, they struggle to effectively capture global features and long-range dependencies. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multi-level efficient 3D image reconstruction model based on vision transformer (ViT). This model leverages the self-attention mechanism of ViT to capture both global and local features and utilizes attention mechanisms to fuse and refine the extracted features. By introducing generative adversarial ngenerative adversarial networks (GANs), the reconstruction quality and robustness of the model in high noise and low photon environments are further improved. Furthermore, the proposed 3D reconstruction network has been applied in real-world imaging systems, significantly enhancing the imaging capabilities of single-photon 3D reconstruction under strong noise conditions.     Title:SPR based dual parameter wide range curling pot shaped photonic crystal fiber sensor

    Abstract:This article proposes a curling pot shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which utilizes two parallel polished surfaces in the cladding to achieve dual parameter measurements of liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature. The mode characteristics and sensing performance of the designed PCF sensor are studied using the finite element method, and the effects of changes in structural parameters such as pore radius, spacing, and gold film thickness on the resonance spectrum are analyzed. The sensing accuracy of the sensor is insensitive to the change of structural parameters, and it has the characteristics of a wide detection range, high sensitivity, and easy manufacture. When the measured RI is in the range of 1.33 similar to 1.42, the maximum RI sensitivity is 20400 nm RIU-1, and the maximum FOM is 483.3 RIU-1. When the temperature ranges from -10 degrees C to 100 degrees C, the maximum sensitivity is 15.4 nm degrees C-1, and the maximum FOM is 0.43 RIU-1. The tight structure design of the sensor core close to the polishing surface and the anti-spill light design with a uniform arrangement of air holes enhance the SPR effect, which is the essential reason for achieving a wide detection range and high sensitivity.

    Abstract:Vector dissipative soliton molecules (VDSMs) can be promising for polarization multiplexing transmission applications. We report a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) vector dissipative soliton molecule laser. The laser realizes three-type vector dissipative soliton molecules of directly generated 1+2 type, 2+2 type, and outer-cavity projected super-position 2+'2+2' type just by changing the pump power. It's proved that the different generated methods of vector soliton molecules in Hamiltonian systems can also be realized in dissipative systems. This is also the first time that multiple different generated methods of vector dissipative soliton molecules are realized in a fiber resonator based on NPR. The results proved the VDSMs' structures can be controlled, which can be potentially applied in optical frequency comb, optical communication systems, optical logic processing, optical detection, etc.

    Title:Underwater image enhancement via color correction and multi-feature image fusion

    Abstract:The light attenuation underwater causes the actual underwater images to suffer from color cast, low contrast, and weak illumination. To address these issues, an effective fusion-based method is proposed, which realizes color correction (CC), brightness adjustment, contrast, and detail enhancement of underwater images. Concretely, we first design an adaptive CC method via dominant color channel judgment and lower color channel compensation. Then, we detect the brightness of each input image and propose a gamma correction function based on the gradient of the cumulative histogram to adjust the brightness of the low-light images. Subsequently, global histogram stretching and adaptive fractional differentiation techniques are employed to process the brightness-adjusted image, and then the global contrast-enhanced version and detail-enhanced version are generated respectively. To integrate the advantages of both versions, a channel fusion method based on the Lab color space is used to fuse the luminance and color of the two versions separately. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving the color and illumination of underwater images, as well as enhancing the clarity of images. Moreover, the testing results on multiple datasets validate the excellent stability of this method.
